Statistics taught to undergraduate programmes in the department has fundamentally a major service role in helping students fulfill requirements in both core and other academic disciplines. This is besides entrenching development of students in computational mathematics to theoretical and applied aspects.
At the post-graduate degree level studies to exhaust application of principles of statistical and numerical computing in the solution of scientific problems. The techniques of numerical computing are usually found particularly appropriate for the solution of complex scientific problems of huge data which do not easily poses exact mathematical solutions, but for which approximate solutions would suffice.
The statistics thematic focuses on the theoretical study of statistics from the aspect of mathematical statistics as well as the application of statistical concepts in the solution of practical problems, such as in business, economics, engineering, the natural sciences, and the social sciences.
The Department is responsible for the teaching of Mathematics to students in social sciences, business and related disciplines.
